Love West Dulwich Banner Design Competition

In May 2017 a series of vibrant lamp post banners will be erected throughout West Dulwich, featuring artwork and designs celebrating the spirit of the area.

In partnership with Dulwich Festival, Love West Dulwich is inviting entries from artists of all ages and experience who have a connection with West Dulwich.

This is a brilliant opportunity to get your work seen in public in various locations around West Dulwich.

Up to 15 finalists will be selected for display on a series of lamp post banners for the lifetime of the banners.

Winning and commended entries will also be featured in a special exhibition before the finished banners are installed and each winner will receive a copy of ‘Street Art, Fine Art’ by Ingrid Beazley and 1 year’s Membership of the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

 

THE CHALLENGE

The competition is open to artists and designers of all ages, with a connection to West Dulwich – you might live, study or work here, have family or friends in the area, or simply love the place for another reason.

We want entrants to think creatively about what West Dulwich means to them.

Submissions will need to work within a narrow portrait format – on banners with overall dimensions of 785mm wide by 2200mm high, consisting of a matt printed PVC fabric.

Love West Dulwich Lamp Post Art Banner Competition

 

The entries should in some way reflect the character of West Dulwich. Themes could include, but are not limited to:

– Moments of West Dulwich
– Nature and local wildlife
– Local landmarks
– Community
– Streetscapes
– People

 

HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

All submissions will be judged by a panel to include representatives from the Dulwich Festival, Dulwich Outdoor Gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery and members of the local community.

Entries may be submitted by individuals, or groups, by Monday 30th January 2017
Each individual or artist or group may submit a single artwork, or multiple artworks, up to a maximum of 3 entries.

Submissions should contain:

A digital copy of each submitted artwork (originals of the selected winning entries will be requested at a later date for display in a local exhibition).

Your full contact details – Name, Address, email and/or contact telephone number.

A brief statement (no more than 200 words) explaining how your work reflects how you see West Dulwich.

Submissions on a CD should be sent, postage paid, or delivered by hand to:

A selection of up to 15 winning entries will be chosen by the competition jury panel by Friday 24 February 2017 (the exact final number of winning entries will depend on quantity and quality of the submissions received).

All competitors will be advised of the result by email and in advance of any press release.

It is Love West Dulwich’s intention to use the winning entries on the final banners for this project, however we reserve the right not to proceed should circumstances require.

Competition key dates:

– Competition launch – Monday 5th December 2016

– Submission deadline – Monday 30th January 2017

– Jury reviews submissions and selects winning entries – Friday 24th February 2017

– Local exhibition of winning entries – April 2017 (exact date and location TBC)

– Installation of banners planned to take place in April/May 2017

 

COMPETITION SMALL PRINT

Winning entries will have their artwork returned on the week commencing 24th April 2017.
Whilst we will certainly look after the entries, we cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage incurred. Please note that Winners’ and Runner Ups’ work may need to be slightly cropped, mounted, or pierced in order to be reproduced for use on the banners.
All original artworks of winning entries must have the artist or group’s name and contact details clearly written on the back, or if transferred digitally included in the covering email/note.
The Winners and Runners Up will be displayed in a local exhibition in April 2017 (further details of exhibition location and exact date will be announced in due course).
Up to 15 Winners will have their artwork reproduced and displayed on a lamp post banner within West Dulwich, for up to 3 years, or for the lifetime of the banner itself.
We plan to get coverage in the local press so there may be a requirement to be photographed for any resulting feature. Selected portraits may also be posted on our website & Facebook / Twitter feed.
